WHY YOUNG MEN SHOULD UNLEARN GENDER STEROTYPES CONCERNING DOMESTICITY
Ever heard a male say “I cannot do that – it is girls that should do it”? Then you would understand where this article is tilting towards.
I am the only boy amongst three females and much older now, I can sense the intentionality tinge when my mum makes me do ‘house hold chores’ or do what my “sisters are supposed to do” even when they are around and should do it.
And while my father has never “made” me do all this – he spoke with his actions. So who was I not to divest myself from those sort of stereotypes?
From washing plates to cooking to going to the market to purchase foodstuffs to sweeping/cleaning the toilets to washing her/my sister’s clothes. Low-key this list is endless!
She always rung it and still does that “no chore was specifically originated for any gender” mantra to me.
Unapologetically, I’m glad to have been raised in that manner because to a large nuance, it has shaped me into the man I have become (still a small boy sha).
I mean, I have had cause to be with some of my male friends and we have shared the same space for a period of time and I have encountered quite a disquieting and ubiquitous fad.
